Requirements for Confirmation

 

  1. The confirmation program is open to all who are 10th grade or above in the present school year. Committing to come to the sessions does not mean you are committing to receive the sacrament. However, at the time of the Rite of Confirmation, the confirmation candidates should freely desire the sacrament and freely commit themselves to follow in the life of Christ and become actively involved in the Church.

  3. A candidate must have been baptized in the Catholic Church or have been validly baptized in another Christian denomination. A candidate’s baptismal certificate or a photocopy of it is required. If you were baptized or had 1st Eucharist at St. Mary’s, we have your baptism records already on file. If you were baptized elsewhere, your copy of the certificate is due by next session.

  5. The family of the candidate must be registered in the parish or the candidate can register independently. (Bring registration forms)

  7. Attendance at the sessions is extremely important. Missed sessions must be made up. If absence is unexcused a $20.00 fee is charged for a makeup lesson (so please phone in if you have to miss a session.)

  9. A candidate must participate in an interview with the pastor/team to determine his/her desire for an understanding of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures, and the Sacrament of Confirmation.

  11. A candidate must choose a sponsor and have the sponsor attend certain sessions with him/her. (Parents can be substitutes for emergencies)

  13. A candidate must complete at least 10 hours in service projects and turn in those forms as the projects are completed.

  15. A candidate is to choose a confirmation name. This name may be the name of a canonized saint or the candidate may choose his/her own baptismal name. Only 1 name is used by the Bishop at Confirmation when you are sealed.

  17. A candidate is strongly encouraged to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before the day of Confirmation.

  19. A candidate is to pick a special scripture reading and make a prayer for our prayer services. They are also to pick a Saint and make a report about that person. These requirements can be done at a meeting of candidates only.

  21. A candidate is responsible for remembering when the sessions and dates of church activities are coming up on the calendar. Reminders will be posted for you in the Sunday bulletins. Homework from the textbook is to be completed by the dates on the schedule. Late work means no commitment and could result in waiting another year for Confirmation celebration.

  23. A candidate is to know the basic prayers of the Catholic Church, (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be ). He/she is also to know how to say the rosary, know the Nicene Creed that we say at Mass, and know the 7 sacraments, the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and the 10 Commandments. They also must know the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

  25. A candidate is urged to participate in church activities, especially the youth group activities just for their age group. (Parents are urged to get involved also as chaperone, drivers, etc.)

  27. A candidate is to participate in Sunday Mass!!!! They are to have good attendance in CCE classes. No more than 7 absences per year.

 

 

 

Requirements for Sponsors

 

1. Sponsor must be a member of the Roman Catholic Church and have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.

If married, the sponsor must have been married by a priest or deacon.

 

2. Sponsor can not be a parent of the child preparing for Confirmation.

 

3. Sponsor will accompany the candidate at sessions, retreats, rehearsal and at the Celebration of Confirmation (or be sure a parent is substituting).

 

4. Sponsor will help the Confirmation candidate with homework and questions and offer guidance and prayer.

 

5. Sponsor will share their faith story with the Candidate.

 

6. Sponsor will continue after Confirmation to be there for the candidate to lend spiritual support.
